Ingredients

Cake Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
Frosting Ingredients
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.5 cups heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red food coloring
  • Sprinkles or decorations for topping

Method

Baking
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry mix, then mix until well combined.
  4. Slowly stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
Frosting
  1. Beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and heavy cream, mixing until smooth.
  2. Add vanilla and mix in red food coloring to your liking.
Assembly
  1. Once the cakes are cool, frost the top of one layer and place the second layer on top. Frost the top and sides of the cake.
  2. Finish with sprinkles or decorations of your choice.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for a fluffier texture. You can substitute vegetable oil with applesauce, or use raspberry/strawberry puree for natural frosting color.
