Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 0.5 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs Ensure eggs are at room temperature
  • 1 cup milk
  • 0.5 cups vegetable oil Can be substituted for applesauce
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract Can be substituted for almond extract
  • 1 cup boiling water This step adds tenderness to the cake
For the Frosting
  • 1 cup butter Cream the butter for the frosting
  • 4 cups powdered sugar Add more if frosting is too thin
  • 0.5 cups cocoa powder
  • 2/3 cups milk Add gradually to reach desired consistency
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prep two heart-shaped cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients. Mix well until everything is combined.
  4. Carefully stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  2. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  3. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and cool completely on a wire rack.
Frosting
  1. For the frosting, cream butter in a bowl, gradually adding powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with milk, until you reach the desired consistency. Mix in vanilla.
  2. Once the cakes are cool, frost the top of one layer, stack the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides. Decorate as desired and serve!

Notes

For best results, allow cakes to cool longer before frosting. Consider topping each slice with fresh strawberries or raspberries for added color.
