  • 1 loaf French bread Use day-old bread for optimal absorption.
  • 4 large eggs Can be substituted with aquafaba for a vegan option.
  • 1 cup heavy cream Use coconut cream for a dairy-free version.
  • 1 cup milk Almond milk can be used as a substitute.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter For greasing the baking dish.
  • to taste additional sugar for caramelizing Use as needed.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Slice the French bread into thick slices and place them in a greased baking dish.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are well soaked.
  5. Cover and let it sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and custardy.
  2. Once baked, sprinkle sugar over the top and use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until golden and crunchy.
  3. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Top with fresh berries, powdered sugar, maple syrup, or whipped cream for added flavor. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for about 3 days, or slices can be frozen for up to a month.
